Understanding and Navigating IFTA Simplifying Fuel Tax Reporting

The International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) is a pivotal agreement between the lower 48 states of the United States and Canadian provinces, streamlining fuel use reporting for motor carriers operating across multiple jurisdictions. Excluding Alaska, Hawaii, and Canadian territories, IFTA standardizes how fuel taxes are reported and distributed.

IFTA License and Reporting

Carriers with an IFTA license receive decals for their vehicles and file quarterly fuel tax reports. These reports determine net tax or refund due and help redistribute taxes to the appropriate states.

IFTA Requirements

  • Applicable to vehicles over 26,000 pounds gross weight or with three or more axles.
  • Exemptions often include recreational and certain farm or government vehicles.

Unified Carrier Registration Act of 2005 (UCR Act)

Replacing the Single State Registration System (SSRS), the UCR Act requires annual payments based on fleet size, applying to all interstate commercial vehicles, not just for-hire vehicles.

Royal Service Pro specializes in assisting carriers with IFTA compliance, from license application to accurate quarterly reporting.
